“We want the girls to know there is a group of ladies who want to help," she said. “We try to show Christ’s love to young girls in a difficult situation.”

Mrs. Wood said she tries to encourage the girls to think positively about themselves. Society is pointing fingers at unmarried pregnant girls, and Mrs. Wood feels it is important to let the girls know that they will have support for the “very courageous decision" they have made to continue the pregnancy. She said not all girls, want to go through with natural labor, but the techniques she teaches can help in labor even if medications are used.

The program is fairly new. but Mrs. Wood hopes the one-on-one mentoring program will continue. Some girls cope well with the pregnancv and having a small baby, but as the baby becomes a toddler the advice and friendship of someone who has gone the same experience can be very important, she said.

Mrs. Heddleston said the group is hoping to expend the program to include pregnancy prevention working with various churches on an abstinence-based sex education program such as the Baptist program “True Love Waits.”
