The story tells of her two grandmothers, Grandmother Doran who dressed her up like a little doll and tried to make a complete lady of her. And her Grandmother Bledsoe, who introduced her to farm life and helped keep her feet on the ground.
Another major influence was an early adolescence spent trying to overcome problems caused by curvature of the spine, a summer spent on her back in a frame that did no good and the operations that followed fusing some of her vertebra and leaving her in a full body cast for months. From that experience she learned to entertain herself, to be independent.
