Sen. Saslaw, the chief sponsor of more than 200 bills during his legislative career, serves on four committees: Education and Health, which this year he will chair, Transportation, Commerce and Labor, and Courts of Justice. Sien. Saslaw is the first nonlawyer to be elected to the Courts of Justice Committee in the 200 year history of the General Assembly.
In response to how much additional time would be required as majority leader, Sen. Sdslaw would only say: “A lot.”
Sen. Saslaw, 55, who was bom in Washington D.C., has lived in Northern Virginia for 30 years. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received a degree in economics. He owns a small business in Fairfax County.
His wife, Eleanor, is the director of guidance at West Springfield High School. His daughter, Jennifer, 19, is a sophomore at the University of Virginia.
As majority leader of the Senate, Saslaw succeeds Hunter Andrews (Dlst), who was defeated in November in his bid for a ninth consecutive term. Sen. Andrews had served as majority leader since 1980.
