In addressing next year’s school budget, teachers asked the School Board first of all not to cut any staff and second for raises that would average 5 percent.
They also requested more money for instructional materials. Speaking for the Rappahannock County Education Association, Carol Johnson said teachers are especially concerned about more funds for computer software and reading materials. She said a survey of teachers showed their next concern was more funds for staff development so that each teacher would be able to attend one conference per year
She said teachers at the elementary school were concerned about maintenance and cleanliness at the school, and high school staff was concerned about lack of space. She said teachers at both schools hoped more space could be air conditioned.
Rosa Crocker asked the board to include $4,000 in the budget for enrichment programs such as assemblies and more in-depth activities with small groups of students.
Tom Wolfe showed the board a drawing of the sign the Athletic Boosters’ Club hopes to erect in front of the high school. The board approved the design.
“Oh, how nice, it’s beautiful,” Chairman Beverly Massie said. The board approved the design for the sign.
