If you have a baby who was bom in 1995, you should know that in order to claim your baby as a tax deduction for 1995 when you file your tax return in 1996, the child must have a Social Security number.
“Prior to tax year 1995, children listed as dependents on tax returns who were under age one were not required to have a number,” explains Bruce A. Hundley, manager of the Culpeper Social Security office. “Now a new law requires that all dependents, regardless of age, have a Social Security number beginning with tax year 1995.”
However, there is an exception: for children born in November or , December of 1995 or in December of J"!996; the parents have until the following year to get a Social Security number, he said.
