A seasonal concert of love songs comes to The Theatre at Washington at 8 p.m., on Saturday, April 20.
The four musicians known collectively as “La Rondinella” have titled their program “Sleep, Dreams, and Awakenings: Renaissance and Traditional Music of Love and Spring from England, Scotland, and America.”
Elizabethan love songs, ballads, sprightly country and morris dance tunes, and virtuoso instrumental pieces are performed on Renaissance instruments, including the lute, recorder, and viola da gamba. Sleep and dreams were major topics for composers of the English Renaissance, who were fascinated by the association of fantasies, unrequited love, and the subconscious. The reawakening of the earth and arrival of spring have always been a time of singing and dancing. The program draws on the rich repertoire of Renaissance and traditional music of tlje season.
