One of our 4-H Cloverbud Clubs will be selling lunch at the Earth Day Kite Fly on Saturday, April 20 at Ben Venue Farm. They will be serving pita pocket sandwiches as a fund raiser for their club. Proceeds from the fund-raiser will provide scholarships to 4-H Cloverbud Camp this summer and to support other club projects. When they told me about their menu, it gave me an idea for may nutrition column this week. Pita bread is nutritious because it’s usually made with whole-grain flour. And it’s a popular alternative to regular sandwich bread when you want to try something different.
Definition
Pita bread is a flat, round bread also known as Syrian bread, Armenian bread or Middle Eastern flat bread. Unlike tortillas, pita bread is yeast-leavened and baked in a very hot oven. Its two layers are almost separated during baking. A hollow center forms that can be split very easily, making a pocket. It can be opened at one end and filled for a sandwich or cut in half for two smaller sandwiches.
History
Pita bread originated in Egypt and the Middle East centuries ago. Some say this variety of chewy flat bread is Syrian, others Arabian or Israeli. It was introduced to the United States by restaurants here that served Middle Eastern cuisine and has since become a fairly mainstream product.
Availability
