Pattison will teach object writing, finding ways to reach deeper into oneself when writing, using all the senses, including an inner awareness of one’s body and the kinesthetic sense of one’s relation to the surrounding space.
Paxton will lead a class that shows different successful ways to approach songwriting and political songwriting. Unique in his approach, Reisler will teach melody as the essence of music. He plans to explore ways to expand a short musical phrase into a melody that inspires the lyric.
Local resident Micah Soloman felt the workshop he attended last year was especially helpful. “When you write songs you tend to get into a rut, writing the same thing over and over. Paul teaches different ways to think about melodies and words,” he said. In fact he enjoyed it so much that his company, Oasis CD Duplication, in Flint Hill, is sponsoring the upcoming workshop.
By teaching at workshops in many states, including Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Maryland, Reisler said he found the emphasis was always on lyric writing. However, he believes in teaching melody writing in connection with words.
“Perhaps the reason I have been teaching so much is that there are few people teaching melodies for their songs,” he said.
