Local bicyclists are planning a benefit ride along the entire 105 mile Skyline Drive to aid Steve and Melody Young and their family.
The Skyline Drive was devastated this winter as ice and snow broke trees and wreaked havoc on the nature trails. The cyclists plan to tour the devastation and also raise money needed for another kind of natural calamity, the reoccurrence of leukemia in Steve Young, a former Rappahannock resident.
The father of two sons, he is looking at the probability of having to undergo the second bone marrow transplant in less than seven years. Young successfully underwent a bone marrow transplant recipient from an unrelated donor at University of Virginia Hospital. He recovered miraculously and completely, went to work at the Communications Corporation of America and resumed life. He and his family bought a home in Orange County and everything was great for six years until he contracted a different form of leukemia.
Since before Christmas he has been hospitalized numerous times and received chemotherapy. He is awaiting a second transplant or other treatment. The family budget has been devastated also as his wife, Melody has had to take extended time away from her job to drive him to treatment at the University of Virginia Medical Center and
