Sugar maples occur naturally on the higher altitudes in Virginia. Below that, it has mostly been planted as a shade tree and spread from its own vigorous two-parted, winged seeds, called samaras. A word that rolls out with pleasure.
There is a large and ancient Norway maple in our side yard. Its yellow-green flowers won’t appear until late April or early May. This native of Europe was once a widely planted because it grows quickly and provides dense shade.
