a nest cavity in a high dead branch. I have found pulpy chips from his or her hard working on the ground; I also hear the whacking when I am still and quiet long enough.

There is a fine red maple in the side yard that is showing no signs of blooming. For some reason it is always late in producing tiny red flowers. This tree is close to the Norway maple and I see no evidence that the introduced tree has inhibited its growth in any way.

It’s the red maple, Acer rubrum, that delights and satisfies my yearning for a signal of the spring-to-come. Rubrum means “red,” of course, and red it is from the ruby flowers through the red petiole, another good-sounding word meaning “leaf stem” and the foliage in the fall. Autumn sounds far away to me just now. I’m ready for spring.
