John Kirchner’s Middle St. Gallery show, “Tobacco”2 on view until March 29, is essentially a unified essay, as opposed to an assemblage of separate works of art. He manages to be profound, offhand, witty and tragic.
Some of his work required time and patience, as well as imagination, to create. Much of it is insubstantial and not meant to last. The viewer is greeted inside the door by an empty rocking chair an arm of which is piled with smoked cigarettes falling on the floor and the seat of the chair. They look like butts from almost a life-time of smoking. This “scene” isn’t listed and hence is untitled on the exhibition
