Norway maples are not as popular as they once were because they crowd out desirable native trees. It has also been determined that the root system of Norway maples produces a deterrent that inhibits the growth of other plants under and around the tree. I can attest to this. Nothing grows under my Norway maple and the grass seed I have planted amounts to nothing.
I have affection for this mighty tree because it provides cooling shade during hot summer days. Robins like it for their nests and a Red-bellied Woodpecker is excavating
