The “radical reliance” the letter speaks of is a full reliance on God, who for many is totally reliable. The Christian Scientist finds that a deep spiritual understanding of God and man’s relation to Him is powerful and safe enough to heal serious physical disease. He chooses that means of healing because of its proven effectiveness, not because of any martyrdom to his beliefs.
The loss of a child under any system of healing is certainly a tragedy. But no system can guarantee healing in every case.
