appreciate Kirchner’s work, viewers should stick around long enough to enjoy his visual puns and allow his apparently simple frottages (rubbings) or arrangements to jog their imaginations.

Kirchner apparently doesn’t want to burden himself with conventional art — sculpture, painting and other forms. He seems to consider that the concept of art for the ages is unnecessary and perhaps prideful. Realism for him is exploring matter, space and appearances.

Our lives are essentially ephemeral. He wants us to think about that by showing us the ephemeral trappings of our lives.

The Middle Street Gallery is open Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
