Accident
takes life
of Foster

A tragic accident Friday morning took the life of 50-year-old Scrabble resident Ethel Mae Foster.
According to Virginia State Police Trooper W.A. Sumner, Foster was in her 1987 Oldsmobile traveling on Route 618 and ran into the side of a dump truck driven by Carroll Edward Lamb, 51, of Front Royal, when Lamb failed to stop at the intersection of Routes 729 and 618. Sumner said it is doubtful that she ever saw the truck. (The intersection is almost a blind one.)
Although the exact cause of death is not know as yet, pending the coroner’s report, Sumner said Foster suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lamb was driving a 1975 Chevrolet dump truck belonging to Lake Paving of Front Royal. He was hauling a load of stone to be used for road work at Routes 617 and 616. Lamb was traveling south on Route 729 and failed to yield right of way at the intersection at Route 618. He has been charged with reckless driving and not having a commercial driver’s license.
The investigation into the accident is still ongoing said Sumner. A state police vehicle inspector fully inspected the truck at the scene and a state police reconstructionist trooper completely reconstructed the accident at the scene that morning. Sumner is waiting to get their reports and is still interviewing witnesses to the accident.
The Castleton, Flint Hill and Amissville Volunteer Fire and Rescue companies responded to the scene and witnesses and rescue personnel told Sumner that Foster was not wearing a seat belt.
Lamb was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the accident.
