During the 7th grade graduation ceremonies at Rappahannock County Elementary School the “Liz” Tole Memorial Award was presented to Jonathan Robinson. This award recognizes a 7th grade student who is considered by teachers and peers to demonstrate a significant level of compassion, courage, kindness and patience toward others. The award is made in memory of Elizabeth Tole, who was an active volunteer at RCES for 13 years until her death in March 1997. She worked in the library, the office, and as one-on-one reading coach with younger children with special needs.
Robinson is a native of Rappahannock County and had been home schooled through the 6th grade. This is his first year at RCES. He is a straight “A” student who participates in computers, sports, guitar, piano and horseback riding.
Tole was noted for her many acts of kindness to teachers and staff at RCES. These acts took many forms from gifts of crafts to cards remembering special occasions or just for fun. She also made scores of knitted caps over a number of years for babies in the premature nursery at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. A legendary baker, her “Tole House” cookies, cakes, and other delicious treats were enjoyed by numerous students and staff members in need of a special “lift.” She was also a lover of wildlife, especially birds, which flocked to her patio door in great numbers.
