As a part of the visioning
process for Rappahannock County, I’d like to address the future of our multi-level relationship with the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The current Comprehensive Plan of Rappahannock County acknowledges and honors that relationship with five of 10 plan goals speaking specifically to the need to preserve and protect the beautiful, natural and unspoiled Rappahannock view shed, especially with regard to the ecologically and aesthetically sensitive ridgetops.
Our mountains have long been viewed as one of the county’s most valuable resources, both on the economic and spiritual levels. Some of us may seek to profit from their “development,” while many of us are content to simply appreciate their wild beauty, grace and energy.
Currently, there seems to me to be an increasing interest and awareness in what Aldo Leopold called “The Land Ethic” — an acknowledgement that our destiny is interwoven with that of the land, as goes its health,
