In a specially convened meeting June 24, the outgoing Washington Town Council finalized its year-end business, approving the proposed 1998-99 budget, appropriating money to build a visitors welcome center, and approving the town street survey. The budget passed 4-3 by roll call vote.
Outgoing Treasurer Louise Van Dort headed off a potential budget impasse by recommending realignment of $4,000 from a sewer contractor account into the fire truck fund. Though all members of the council supported some level of funding for the Washington fire company, they disagreed concerning the amount. Wastewater Committee chairman Charlie Tompkins described the situation as “a question of priorities.”
Observing that fire protection is a county responsibility and that residents of the town also pay the fire levy, Tompkins said, “I strongly support the fire department, but the perception is that we, as a town, are paying for our own town fire department. Without The Inn, the food
