The theft of the unusual, ornamental copper pot, stolen several weeks ago from a residence off Rock Mills Road, was solved by Lt. Larry Sherertz last week when he arrested Murphy J. Reid Jr., 42, of Rappahannock and charged him with grand larceny.
In an interesting twist the pot turned out to be an antique still, about five feet across and four feet deep. It is believed to have been made in the late 1700s or early 1800s. The owner estimates its value at about $4,000.
Whether it was due to Halloween antics or the invigorating fall weather, it was a busy week for Rappahannock Sheriff’s Office personnel as they responded to a series of larcenies and burglaries in the county.
Two larcenies occurred on Oct. 27, one in Sperryville and the other in Amissville. A money box with cash and a check in it was taken from Mary Atkins’ home on Locust Lane in Sperryville. Deputy Connie Compton responded to the scene. There was no evidence of forced entry and the money box was found close to the home with the money
