This past Saturday, as Mayor

of the Tbwn of Washington, I had the honor of being invited to and attending the banquet celebrating the 125th anniversary of the First Baptist Church. It was an evening of warm fellowship and wonderful food. More importantly it was an evening to honor 125 years of distinguished service to God and to our community.

Established in 1873, the church initially occupied a site on Wheeler Street. The first 45 members were baptized in the Rush River in a year that must have enjoyed more rain than the present. In less than 10 years the church moved to its present location on Main Street where it and its congregation have played an integral part in the town’s history.

I congratulate and commend the church and its pastor, Rev. Dr. Wendell R. Grant,
