National Trust, Peter Brink, talk about historic districts, significant progress has been made largely due to the efforts of Williams. Gov. James Gilmore appreciated her efforts in a letter he sent her. He recognized Williams for her distinguished commitment to historic preservation and made her a recipient of the community resource toolbox:
Last week she was reading her way through the pamphlets and letters. She will serve as liaison between the community and the state, so village residents can direct concerns and questions to her.
“You have to work together or else you will have a harder time succeeding,” she said.
Williams credits Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors chairman Pete Estes with the village being designated as a historic district. He and Bill Loomis, then owner of the Sperryville hotel, worked in the early 1980s to have the town recognized for its distinctive architecture.
In 1997 Williams organized the Sperryville Historic Committee. Present and past residents of Sperryville have donated old photographs and $1,100 to the cause that resulted in a marker for the village.
