Tennis instruction planned

Rappahannock resident and tennis professional Hunt Harris will be offering instructional tennis clinics this summer and again in the fall when weather and school/work schedules shift. Instruction for adults and youth on all levels will be offered - beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Classes will start the first week in August, and the tentative schedule thus far is as follows: Tuesdays: 8:30 a.m. Beginner youth; 9:30 Intermediate youth; 10:30 Advanced youth. Fridays: 8:30 a.m. Beginner adults; 9:30. Intermediate adults; 10:30 Advanced adults.

Some classes of adults and youth may be mixed if compatible and/or necessary. Additional classes and optional times/days are possible if needed and available, such as late afternoon/early evening classes, weekends, and specialty clinics, such as doubles play/strategy. Classes will be limited to no more than seven participants, and will last approximately one hour, including warm-up. Private lessons are available upon request and at additional locations.

Fees will be on a sliding-scale basis according to the number of participants: four or more persons at §10 p/p, three persons at $15 p/p, two persons at $20 p/p. Barter a possibility. Balls will be provided. Participants must bring racquets. Walk-ons welcome if space available.

Qualifications of instructor include: National Interscholastic Champion; Collegiate All-American; MATA Junior Champion; international tournament experience; head professional at tennis club. For more information, to sign-up, or to discuss a possible schedule change, call Hunt at 540-987-3366.

Jenkins family reunion set

The family of John H. (Johnnie) and Betty Jane (Janie) Jenkins will host a reunion on Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Washington fire hall from 1 until 5 p.m. “Bring food and drinks to share,” said a spokesperson. All are invited.

Meeting canceled

The Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board has canceled its Aug. 10 meeting. The next regular monthly meeting of the board will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Bradford Road Office in Culpeper.

Art Camp planned

Young people ages 5-12 are invited to attend the fifth annual Art Camp with Laurie Marshall at the Rappahannock Recreation Center Aug. 2-6 from 9:30 a.m. to 12. The cost is $45, which includes most materials. Scholarships are available. There are a few spaces left. Call 675-3267 to register.

Ragged Mountain Resource Center in Sperryville is ' sponsoring the following activities and more information may be obtained about an event by calling the center at 987-3366.

Sunday, Aug. 1: “Blue Ridge to the Bay “ Speaker Series “Terrestrial and Streamside Salamander Monitoring in Shenandoah National Park” with Robin Jung and staff from Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Rappahannock County Library (off US 211 near Washington, phone, 675-3780).

Saturday, Aug. 14: “Second Saturday Hike Series” to trails in Shenandoah National Park (SNP) adjacent to headwaters of Rappahannock River Watershed tributaries. Meet at Mountainside Market on US 211 west of Sperryville between 8-8:30 a.m. and car pool to trail head, return mid-afternoon. Bring food for self and clothing according to weather of day. Destination: Nicholson Hollow Trail on Hughes River.

Families plan reunion

The Jenkins, Woodard and Sisk reunion will be held on Sunday, Aug. 1 at the Rappahannock Park near Washington. It will be an all- day, fun filled event. Those attending should bring a covered dish.
