Everyone loves a good movie. But all too often, mainstream movies are not that good, straight out of Hollywood and loaded with sex, violence and profanity.
Some of the best movies only play in large cities, where the movie-goer is more discerning. But since 1983, The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community has been showing films, so called “art” films, in Washington. Thanks to Rosie Day, Wendy Weinberg, and others, the films are still being shown at The Theater in Washington twice a month.
Rosie Day has been selecting the movies and coordinating the events since 1995. Before that, Bill Young had been in charge.
Mrs. Day says, “1.11 Young became ill. I stopped in to see how he was doing. He needed some help, and that’s how I got started.” _ Mrs. Day researches her selections carefully. She reads reviews of movies in publications such as The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and other sources. Then, she will usually travel to see the movie before making her selection. She also talks to numerous people to get ideas and find out tvhat is out there.
Mrs. Day says, “I usually read a lot about movies. I know when they’re being made. And I see most of the movies before I show them. It doesn’t have to necessarily be something I like. Sometimes I see them and I won’t show them.”
Months in advance, Mrs. Day has to order the film so that she can put together the schedule and film flyer that is mailed out to 1200 people. On the front of the flyer are small versions of the movie’s poster and the schedule.
