Library Board President Franklin Warner took special notice of and gave praise to Treasurer Helen Platt for her expert management of the library’s fiscal affairs. His remarks at the Library Board’s July meeting, echoed by the other Board members, came after Helen Platt reported ‘98-’99 actual expenditures of $97,225.19 and actual income of $97,547.60 versus a budgeted amount of $98,658.00, leaving a net cash balance of $322.41 for the fiscal year.
In other Library financial news, Finance Committee chair John Hartline reported that the full committee had met and agreed with the recommendation of advisors James Jamieson and Ed Barton to invest $40,000 of the Lucas bequest in Triple A-rated government bonds, with a specific investment recommendation forthcoming. This investment approach would take advantage of the low risk and reasonable rate of return (6 to 7 percent) of these government securities. The Board voted its approval of the recommendation.

In his report, Library Director David Shaffer noted that there will be a presentation at the library on Aug. 1 entitled “Terrestrial and Streamside Monitoring in the Shenandoah National Park.” The presentation is a part of the Ragged Mountain Resource Center’s “Blue Ridge to the Bay” Speaker Series, and will feature Robin Jung, Chris Addison, Rebecca Holmes, John Whissel and Jennifer Shirk of the Terrestrial Salamander Monitoring Program.
