it will not be much longer, perhaps a month or two, until the grant documents are complete, and the project can get underway. Gateway Project chair Tom Junk and member Bayard Catron revealed grant specifics at a meeting at the Sperryville Fire Hall last Thursday.
Though the anticipated funding of $220,000 is significantly less than the $500,000 sought, Junk and Catron believe that key elements of the project can be completed. Though subject to community approval, they i believe that the following improvements should be prioritized and i included in the project: construction of a footbridge over the Thornton River; Main Street enhancements including pavement removal and/ i resurfacing, burying of utility lines, and drainage improvements; emplacement of pedestrian walkways in the right-of-way; and purchase and installation of signage.
If all goes well, the process should start with preliminary design contractor selection at a public meeting in January of next year, and the subsequent public review of the results of that preliminary engineering. Both Tbm Junk and Bayard Catron stressed the importance of public participation in all phases of this project, and they encouraged community involvement.
