1961, provides for service maintenance of the cemeteries within the park boundaries except in those cemeteries where the area comprising the cemetery was reserved to the original owner.
Basically, this means the park is willing to work with established family associations to develop standards for cemetery maintenance and plot markings. But, specific issues dealing with maintenance, monument and plot marking, and grave locations remain the responsibility of each cemetery’s family association and will not be enforced by park staff.
The cemetery issue was a topic many people had questions about at the last meeting. As problems arise, such as husbands and wives not being able to be buried together due to the growth of trees and cemetery boundaries being disputed, the cemetery topic should be a reoccurring topic.
The next meeting of the Blue Ridge Committee will be Thursday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rappahannock County Library. The agenda will include: poaching in the park, cultural resources, upgrade on fees, and Gary Somers, who has been appointed as the new park resource person.
