day was Mrs. Maureen Messick of la dama maya herb and flower farm in Luray. Mrs. Messick grows flowers and herbs organically and air-dries them for use in wreaths, table arrangements, and bouquets. She emphasized that the best time to pick flowers to be dried is just before their prime.
She explained how she air-dried flowers and indicated that the three necessary ingredients for successful drying are 1) flowers must be hung in total darkness, 2) they must have good air circulation, and 3) they must be dried at temperatures of 80 degrees F or more. She had several samples of dried flowers and herbs, as well as finished wreaths, to show club members.
Mr. Jim Bauman from Designer’s Choice in Culpeper was the visiting judge for the Horticulture and Design Exhibits. In the Design Exhibits, Class I, Pure & Simple, Helen Platt received a blue ribbon in the advanced division, and Joanne Getsinger received
