that two distinct species can not interbreed and produce young. For instance, the chickadee and titmouse do not interbreed, even though they are very closely related.
This theory changed when the three flicker “species” overlapped and males of the redshafted encountered females of the yellowshafted. This blending occurred because settlers had planted trees where there had previously been none.
The three “species” of flickers happily and successfully interbred, so either the “law of interbreeding” was incorrect, or they were really three races of the same species. The latter view is now accepted.
