;' The celebrated jazz pianist Bill Charlap will give a concert at The Theatre at Washington, Va. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. -t> Charlap played in Little Washington just a year ago and is reluming in response to many requests from an enthusiastic audience. > The concert, a solo piano recital, will feature jazz classics and American popular songs - the kind of Wiusic for which Charlap has become widely acclaimed. The New York Times has praised his "deep knowledge of the songs from American musical theater." As the New Yorker pointed out in ah appreciative profile of Charlap, he grew up in a musical and theatrical atmosphere.
The same point was made in a review late last year in The Atlantic Monthly, which noted that "If Bill Charlap has a greater sensitivity than most young jazz pianists to the melodic and emotional qchness of standards, it may be because his father was a songwriter and his mother a band Singer." His mother is the singer Sandy Stewart who worked with Benny Goodman, and his father the songWriter Moose Charlap. Charlap says, "I don't ever remember hot playing the piano."
