1930-2001
John G. Schmitz was born on Aug. 12, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wis., son of the late Jacob and Minnie Frueh Schmitz.
He died of cancer on Jan. 10, 2001 at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., surrounded by his family.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, the former Mary E. Suehr; the Honorable John P. Schmitz of McLean; Captain Joseph Schmitz, USNR of Bethesda, Md; Jerome Schmitz of Mesa, Ariz.; Mary Letourneau of Seattle, Wash., Theresa Manion of Front Royal; Elizabeth Crnkovich of McLean and 27 grandchildren.
Their seventh child, Philip Schmitz is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
He is also survived by five brothers and sisters in he Milwaukee, Wis. area.
Since 1995 he had been President of Chapelle Charlemagne, a family-owned vineyard in Rappahannock County.
John Schmitz spent most of his career in public service, spanning the decades of the 1960's and 70’s. As ,<a Congressman, State Senator and Presidential Candidate, he was the outspoken standard-bearer for conservative causes such as limited government, states' rights, right-tolife, a strong national defense and worldwide opposition to Communism.
In 1964 at the age of 34, he was first elected to the California State Senate where he represented Orange County.
He was elected to Congress in 1970, replacing the Honorable James B. Utt in a
