lhe holidays are all over and we are into the heart of the winter. This is the time of year to> snuggle up with a warm blanket on cold winter nights and enjoy the relaxing time of the season.
With central heat, we can now be comfortable throughout our homes. When I was growing up most homes had a wood stove in the kitchen for cooking, and a heating stove in another room to keep us warm. This was called a sitting room because this is where we would all sit, talk, play games and entertain each other and guests.
You didn't get to enjoy all the rooms like you do today because there was no insulation and the wood was cut with an ax or a cross cut saw.
The old saying is, when you use wood, it heats you twice. Once when you cut it, and again when you burn it.
There was a floor register in the ceiling above the stove that provided the only heat for the upstairs bedrooms. The atnount of heat was limited because the stoves would not hold heat for a long period of time due to not being lined with fire bricks.
One of the things we used td keep us warm was a "feather tick." It was called this because the heavy blue and white striped material used fdr the outer cover was called ticking, and it was filled with goose feathers. It would puff up around you and helped keep the heat in. Some would sleep on a feather tick, while others would put them on top. You would not move about
