most people notice upon first seeing the boys wrestle, is the intensity of the combat. While the high school is very careful to nurture self-esteem in all the students and is very aware of sensitivity and fragility <of adolescents, wrestling is a win-lose situation. You fight alone and win or lose alone, with no team to hide behind.

Mr. Smythe feels that wrestling is an excellent way for a youngster to learn the self-discipline necessary to control emotions. It is very helpful in learning to harness aggressive feelings, and to learn the jUT control needed to build a healthy, strong body. A successful wrestler, like a gladiator, must be very intelligent. Brute strength does not always win a contest. In fact the term "smart wrestler" is a compliment. Tactics such as who initiates the first contact is a key factor in a wrestling match.
