After nearly two centuries of capable work as a County grist mill, Fletcher's Mill, on Fletcher's Mill Road in Sperryville, is seeing the beginning of the end or, perhaps, the beginning of a new beginning.
Ken and Ann Pankow of Flint Hill are closing in on the end of a twoyear disassembly process. They, with the help of Greg Foster, Scott Shananhan, Deni Bechard, and Rory Melanson of Neff Crane Service, are disconnecting, dismantling, and removing the structure's framework, which will be transported to the Pankows Flint Hill home.
The Pankows intend to reassemble the upper floors of the mill—at least as much of it as is usable—to create an addition to their log cabin home. The reassembly will take as long as the disassembly—two years—and when complete old Fletcher's Mill will awake to new surroundings and a new vocation, but at least it will still be here in Rappahannock.
Mrs. Pankow pointed out the water damage in the basement level of the mill caused by shifting of the riverbed. She said that the rear portion of the mill had sustained significant damage, and would likely have caused the collapse of the entire structure within a few years.
In its new home, the mill will be preserved and protected, and it will, in turn, protect its new owners, but it is still sad to see it go.
