The Boys' Junior Panther (8th grade) Basketball Team had quite a week — three games with two wins, both at home, left some parents proud of the present and some fans hopeful of the future. On Monday, Jan. 15, the Page County Panthers came to town for an afternoon contest. They got more then they bargained for as the Jr. Panthers put on quite a show to garner a 38 to 33 victory.
Down by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, the Jr. Panthers refused to throw in the towel. Scrapping back they overcame the deficit with some tenacious defense and an overwhelming desire to win. Jason Jenkins led the "JP's" with 10 points as Monte Christian and Ethan Berry each contributed nine. The play of seventh-grader Eric Phillips was critical to the win as he grabbed game-high 17 rebounds and scored all six of his points in the final 6 minutes.
The "JP's" held the Page squad to one point in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the euphoria of the win on Monday created a feeling of overconfidence on Thursday, Jan. 18, as the Junior Panthers traveled to Randolph Macon Academy.
The RMA yellow jackets soundly beat the Rapp squad 43 to 22.
On Friday, Jan. 19, the Junior Panthers regained their composure and battled Signal Knob Middle School's 8th grade team from Strasburg. This time it was the Rapp squad that got the early lead with the "JP's" going into the halftime up 19 to 9.
But the Strasburg team refused to quit this time and struggled back to within two points at 23 to 21 when the third quarter ended. With defense the key to their success, the Jr. Panthers were able to foil the efforts of the Strasburg squad and come away with a 32 to 26 victory.
Monte Christian had 10 points and 17 rebounds to lead all players in those categories. Ethan Berry added nine
