There are many types of feeders available designed for the specific purpose of discouraging squirrels. The best ones have a cage protecting the feeder from the squirrel but allows small birds to enter through the screen to feed. ’
There are birdseed and food additives available containing hot pepper, which will not bother your birds, but the squirrels do not seem to enjoy.
A product called Squirrel Away is commercially available, it is mixed directly into your birdseed and I recommend it for those with no other alternative. Read the directions on the package before using this product.
We only add Squirrel Away to seed we feed our birds and have a separate container for our squirre food.
