The salt starts working at any temperature, but does a better job when it isn't so cold. For the bitter cold weather they use liquid chloride. Salt and sand is used for black top. On gravel and dirt roads they use number eight stone and sand.
We all know bridges freeze faster than roads due to the open draft between the water and bridge. Therefore, they become slick before roads.
Mr. Ennis Jenkins, maintenance supervisor has been with the Transportation Department for 44 years. We know this takes a special person because a lot of planning and organizing is part of his job. He does a superb job. He said, "Everybody works together and gets the job done. They are a good bunch of men."
We all know this is true because all we need to do is compare our roads in Rappahannock to our joining counties and we know what pride they take in their jobs. We thank all of you for the great job you do.
