It was a busy week for Panther teams as everyone saw action and even "Ole Man Winter” managed to grab a game for himself and force a cancellation.
Basketball
The Boys' Basketball teams were on the road early in the week as they traveled to Strasburg for a game on Tuesday, Jan. 16. It was not one of their better games as they came out cold and were unable to put points on the board.
Senior Chris Fletcher had the only first quarter basket for the Panthers and together with five free throws from the team, they finished the first quarter with a meager seven points. The Strasburg Rams, on the other hand, felt comfortable right at home, sinking seven first quarter baskets and jumping out to an 18 to 7 lead at the end of the quarter.
The game was really put out of reach for the Rapp squad in the third quarter, when the Rams outscored the Panthers 30 to 14 and opened a 29-point lead as the quarter ended. The final was Strasburg 87 and Rappahannock County 46.
There wasn't much excitement generated at the Junior Varsity game either. Outscored 21 to 3 in the second quarter by the Strasburg JV, the Panthers spotted the hosting Rams a 33 to 12 halftime lead that was too big to overcome. The JV team did manage a fourth quarter rally behind the hot shooting of Freshman guard David Letsen and Sophomore Gregg Jackson.
Outscoring the Strasburg JV 27 to 14 in the fourth quarter was impressive, but it was not enough. Strasburg won the game 69 to 47.
On Friday, Jan. 19, the Brentsville District High School Tigers came to the RCHS gym for another Bull Run District contest. The Tigers are in second place in the District having only lost once to league-leading George Mason.
Again the Panthers were plagued by a slow start; scoring only six points in the first quarter. Tbugh defense kept the Rapp squad close for awhile, but the Tigers slowly pulled away to lead at the end of the first half by a score of 28 to 16. Although the Panthers outscored the Brentsville team in the second half, it was too little, too late. The game ended with the Tigers on top 56 to 46.
Chris Fletcher had the hot hand again, as he led all scorers with 21 points on the night. After the game, Head Coach Mike Dayton said, "They (Brentsville) were a good team. That's why they’re five and one. Our guys hustled and gave it all they had. You can't ask for any more then that. I thought we played really hard from buzzer to buzzer. We never quit playing. We just got beat by a better team."
The JV team lost earlier in the evening to the Brentsville JV team by the score of 72 to 38.
