The year long cell tower review and approval process is over, at least for the first set of applications, thanks to a unanimous okay vote by the Board of Supervisors on one of Sprint PCS’ multiple choices in their application for an Amissville site.
This last open application presented the Board with the Duxbury and the Amissville Fire and Rescue sites as alternatives - the Fire and Rescue option coming forth through the only concerted and cohesive community lobbying effort seen in the cell tower approval process.
Amissville Fire and Rescue personnel and community supporters coalesced to push the station as the easternmost cell tower site in the County, and they presented a petition with some 350 signatures to support their view that the Fire and Rescue location, though more obtrusive than the Duxbury site, would provide more to the community, both in terms of the use of the income derived from the site lease and in the potential use of the tower for emergency communications.
The Board of Supervisors public hearing on the issue began with Sprint PCS’ attorney, Brian Buniva, reviewing the options and the advantages and disadvantages of each of the two locations. He noted that the Duxbury site was further off US 211, but that there has been some criticism of the location because of the length of the road and the stream crossings required to reach the site.
Of the Fire and Rescue site, he noted that it was at a higher elevation, and thus the tower there could be 180 feet in lieu of 199 feet, if co-location prospects were not a consideration.
