The introduction of the poinsettia into the United States is credited to Joel Poinsett. He was a Southern plantation owner visiting Taxco, Texas and was so impressed with the brilliant red flowering shrub blooming in December that he had some plants sent to his home in Greenville, S.C. They did so well in his greenhouse that he distributed plants to his horticultural friends.
