Regional Visioning
Gary Christie, Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission’s Executive Director, reported on the results and progress of the Commission’s Regional Visioning Project that began last spring. Mr. Christie said that more than 200 people from the five counties in the region participated in the visioning process and its forums, and he reviewed some of the results of the process.
He noted that residents of the region shared certain values: a natural setting, open space, historic resources, good jobs and a balanced economy, a quality educational system, and modest growth.
The vision for the future, Mr. Christie said, centered on maintaining quality of life, including “addressing growth with firm edges between urban and rural areas.” He spoke of the need in the future to maintain a balance between farming, small business, tourism, and industry, and the requirement to support and promote education, opportunities and diversity.
