I therefore beg leave to move — that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessing on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business.”
James Madison, father of the Constitution and author of the First Amendment, moved that Franklin’s appeal for prayer be adopted. Concerning the matter of church and state, Madison wrote, on June 20, 1785: “Religion (is) the basis and Foundation of Government.”
