Beneath the Five Stars, the Five Diamonds, the best chef awards, the celebrity glitz, the restaurant accolades, beneath all this, are two Rappahannock County men who have made enormous contributions to their county and to their hometown, Washington, Va.
They are known to the restaurant critics and gourmet buffs from around the world as owners of the famous Inn. at Little Washington, the Five Star, Five Diamond inn and restaurant which consistently ranks number one and is considered by some to be the best restaurant in America.
Tb those who have lived here beside them for nearly 25 years, Patrick O’Connell and Reinhardt Lynch also are known for their significant contributions to the local economy in making this the special place it is, as well as helping others with their generous support of local charities and fundraisers.
They donate countless dinners for two at the inn to help support good causes.
They also have contributed a collective total of 26 years of service to the town — Mr. Lynch as a town council member for 14 years and now vice mayor, and Mr. O’Connell as a member of the Architectural Review Board for 12 years.
The Rappahannock News salutes them as its 2002 Citizens of the Year.
“The Inn at Little Washington is the pride of Rappahannock County and all of Virginia,” said Gov. Mark Warner, upon learning of the selection of Mr. Lynch and Mr. O’Connell.
“I heartily congratulate Patrick and Reinhardt on their selection as ‘Citizens of the Year,’ and I thank them for their good works and positive contributions to this community, this region and this state.” _
Gov. Warner said he was especially pleased that Chef O’Connell features products from the Virginia countryside.
“His culinary creativity has lifted these regional ingredients to new heights. And the accommodations at the Inn are always world class.”
County Administrator John McCarthy, who was named Citizen of the Year for 2000, had this to say about Mr. Lynch and Mr. O’Connell:
