The Rev. Jennings W. Hobson III, who was Citizen of the Year in 1992, said that he has known Mr. O’Connell and Mr. Lynch since the 1970s, and that they catered the first baptism he performed, as well as the first wedding.
“They have supported this community quietly and regularly,” said Rev. Hobson.
“They have expressed care for this community, despite a lack of acceptance by some folks.”
Over the years, the Inn’s owners have had to face rocky times in their relationship with some townspeople, who fought them every inch of the way when they were seeking to enhance their business.
So when the town council unanimously elected Mr. Lynch vice mayor last month, it was a special achievement. He appeared visibly moved, and said he was “honored by the vote.”
The local charities and organizations that the Inn at Little Washington has supported or sponsored include Trinity Episcopal Church, the 10K Fodderstack Race, the Rappahannock Rough Riders, Child Care and Learning Center, and the Christmas “Shop with a Deputy” program.
Mr. Lynch and Mr. O’Connell have twice opened the Inn for a tour and tea, as a fund raiser to help the Episcopal Church Women.
