On a small stream, kingfisher nesting territories run about, 1,000 yards. Now that the nesting season is over, kingfisher couples have split up and established separate, smaller feeding territories— running about 500 yards along small streams.
I’m hoping, with the recent thawing of the pond, that I’ll hear that rattle call and see those perky butts zooming away from me again really soon. With the large pond and a good-sized stream a few yards from it, this territory should be too good to stay kingfisherless for long.
