Another way to determine if a hole in a bank is a kingfisher’s nest is to look for notches on the edge of the hole, which the birds make when they land there, before entering the nest cavity. When a pond or river offers good hunting but not good nesting sites, kingfishers will travel up to a mile away to find a suitable bank.
