Charmers such as Meadow Beauty (rhexia virginica), a bright pink-flowered wet soil lover, silphiums, skullcaps, liatris, Twinleaf, Dutchman's Britches, Dwarf Larkspur and Blue Cohosh abound here. The catalog is $2 and the nursery is also open by appointment, where you can purchase native “woodies” such as shrubs and vines.

Seeds for native flowers, grasses, trees, shrubs and vines are the fare at Prairie Moon Nursery. There are helpful color photographs, plus comprehensive information on siting, soils, germination requirements, height and bloom period. There are even notes on whether a plant is aggressive or on the federally threatened fist.

Flora
Pretty roses are not impossible to grow in Virginia’s hot, muggy embrace, but it is much easier when the roses are disease-resistant and suited to this climate, as are many of the roses in the Antique Rose Emporium catalog.
The roses are grown on their own roots, a desirable feature in rose quality and are grown in Ttexas, a similarly humid and hot environment. Choose among the species roses," such as Swamp Rose (rosa palustris), especially for wet margins and Prairie Rose (rosa setigera), which makes an excellent deer hedge, plus of course, antique cultivars which are far hardier than most modem hybrids.
Cecile Brunner, Zepherine Drouhin and Madam Isaac Pereire are glorious. Not all heirloom roses are once—blooming nor do they all have French names to confound you. Old Blush is a lovely repeater and so is Duchesse de Brabant. Call 800-441-0002.
Interesting flower bulbs from McClure and Zimmerman can bring new life to the perennial bed, especially summer blooming ones.
Stunners such as pure white and salmon strains of Foxtail Lily (eremurus) or soft yellow and green and cream Kniphofia (pronounced K-nip-hof-ee-a, after a Mr. Kniphof) will command attention.
