This bridle-less , horse brings moviegoer back to a time when the horse was just as important a part of a movie as the actor.
Gandalf is galloping over hill and dale at breakneck speed and down slippery hills with no apparent brakes. Very impressive.
And Aragorn will touch even the hardest of hearts in an equine moment when his horse finds him knocked out and nearly drowned. Aragorn’s steed gently wakes his fallen rider in the sweetest of scenes.
As it turns out, Mortensen was also under the spell of this horse, and several others, during the 15 months spent filming — he actually bought the animals for his own stable.
Unfortunately, we must get through “Two Towers,” and the endless battle to get the real moneymaker, “The Return of the King,” set to open in 2003.
For Tolkien fans, it is the perfect marrying of material with filmmaker. For the rest, the best is yet to come.
