Trillium, wild geranium, pink azalea and other native Virginia wildflowers will be in the spotlight during Shenandoah National Park’s 17th Annual Wildflower Weekend May 10 and 11.
Visitors are welcome to join rangers and volunteer naturalists on a variety of wildflower-related hikes, activities and talks.
Featured speaker Alan Weakley will discuss the “Virginia Flora Project,” an effort to gather centuries of botanical information on Virginia’s plants into a single work containing descriptions, illustrations and results of modem field and genetic research.
Weakley is the curator of the University of North Carolina Herbarium and co-author of the manual. His presentation is at 2 p.m. at the Harry F. Byrd Visitor Center on May 10.
