The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services urges all horse owners to vaccinate their animals now against West Nile Virus (WNV). The WNV vaccine for equines requires two doses administered three to six weeks apart. The vaccine takes four to six weeks to be effective. West Nile Virus first appeared in the U. S. in 1999 in New York City. Last year, there were 14,358 cases of clinical WNV infection reported in horses in 40 states. Virginia experienced 47 equine cases in 2002. The' virus usually lives in wild birds. Mosquitoes transmit it from bird to bird. Occasionally a mosquito that has bitten an infected bird will then bite a human, horse, or other mammal and transmit the virus to them. IVansmission between horses and humans is extremely unlikely. Currently, no drugs exist to kill WNV in horses or humans. Treatment for an infected horse consists of supportive therapy to prevent the animal from injuring itself throughout the two to three weeks of file disease. Last year more than 35 percent of the horses with confirmed WNV infections either died or were euthanized. Horses
